Giardini Mira Lanza is a complex of gardens and an exhibition space on the site of an abandoned soap factory in Rome, Italy. The project began with the study of precedents that dealt with the idea of ruins and layers across time including the Casa dei Crescenzi, a home from the 1800’s that was split into three apartments, and the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano in Merida, Spain. The site itself has a theater, festivals, schools, and museums. The existing ruins of the site were repaired and structures based on the existing ruins were multiplied across the site in order to create courtyards, greenhouses, a soccer field, an exhibition space and an open field for temporary markets. The project tries to reuse the ruins of the soap factory in order to create a contemporary open green space for the community that still recalls what was originally on the site.
